Equity Diversity Inclusion Justice (EDIJ)
What is Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Justice (EDIJ)?
Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Justice (EDIJ) is a framework that aims to create an environment where differences are celebrated, barriers to a flourishing education system are removed and issues such as racial injustice and inequality are actively addressed.
-
Equity means ensuring that everyone has access to the support and opportunities they need to succeed, recognising that different children may need different kinds of help.
-
Diversity recognises and values the richness of differences between people, including culture, race, gender, ability, faith and background.
-
Inclusion means creating an environment where everyone feels welcome, respected and able to participate fully.
-
Justice involves taking action to challenge unfairness, discrimination and inequality so that all members of our community are treated fairly.
How do we implement EDIJ at Ingleton C of E Primary School?
We achieve this through:
-
A diverse and representative curriculum:
We use books, resources and learning materials that reflect a wide range of cultures, identities and experiences. This helps children see themselves represented while also learning about and respecting the wider world. -
Inclusive classroom environments:
Our classrooms are built on love, kindness, honesty and respect. Clear expectations are set to ensure that discriminatory or prejudiced language is not tolerated, creating a safe space where children feel confident to share ideas and discuss differences. -
Equitable teaching approaches:
We use a variety of teaching and assessment methods to support different learning styles and needs, ensuring every child has the opportunity to succeed and participate fully. -
Strong links with families and the community:
We welcome families and community members from different backgrounds to share their experiences, traditions and knowledge, enriching our children’s learning. -
Whole-school celebrations and initiatives:
We recognise and celebrate cultural events and special themed days or weeks that promote understanding, respect and appreciation of diversity across the school.
What are the benefits of an EDIJ focus?
-
Improved learning outcomes:
When children feel valued and included, they are more confident, motivated and engaged in their learning. -
Stronger social and emotional development:
Understanding different cultures and identities helps children develop empathy, respect and positive relationships with others. -
Preparation for life in modern Britain:
An EDIJ approach equips children with the attitudes and skills needed to thrive in a diverse and interconnected society. -
A more positive school community:
Focusing on EDIJ creates a welcoming environment where pupils, staff and families feel respected, supported and a true sense of belonging.
